Case Study O2

The Client
The Telefónica O2 Germany GmbH (O2) is one of the four mobile telephony operators in Germany and, according to the federal network agency, in QIII 2007 has achieved a market share of about 13 % related to the number of participants. O2 mainly distinguishes itself in the market by being one of the first to rely on the convergence between mobile telephony and fixed lines under the product name Genion. This orientation is being consequently pursued since joining with Telefónica Germany. O2 mainly relies on bundle offers that combine mobile telephony, DSL and fixed lines in a single contract.
To continue this success story, among other things O2 plans a further massive network expansion here in Germany. According to the latest press reports O2 aims at investing about 3 billion € in network infrastructure until the end of 2010.

The Challenge
O2 operates an extensive, complex network of directional radio and own fixed lines as well as leased lines.
The network equipment consists of numerous components from radio towers to the on-site store rooms with their racks and power supply and further on, various line paths and gateways as well as various bandwidths. Approaches with tables, lists or ad-hoc data bases are not up to the volume and complexity of a modern fixed and mobile telephony network.
The challenge consists in planning and documenting this extensive network safely and efficiently. Network expansions and changes have to remain feasible and reproducable. In case of errors and outages, alternative routes and configurations have to be established very quickly.

The Solution

In 2004 Xionet established prime contractorship for the implementation of x:aktaTM as central tool for the network planning and documentation for GSM and UMTS (2G, 2.5G and 3G).

Besides interface development and the 100% migration of existing data, Xionet was especially responsible for the enhancement of the tool with further customer specific functionalities and the permanent adjustment to the dynamic requirements of network planning.
Xionet accompanies the project from requirement analysis, realisation and quality management to the productive application and the supporting role.

The Result
Due to the fast introduction of the network planning tool, with in a very short period of time O2 achieved the highest efficiency in administering its network as carrier and operator. The system covers the entire network life cycle from planning to installation, operation and administration of network resources. The development of further functionalities creates a solution custom made for the client also featuring high scalability and flexibility.
Xionet provides one responsible person of contact „one Face to the Customer“ for all project phases from the conception, launch and training to all the subsequent phases of support, maintenance and enhancement.  In addition the client receives permanent adjustment due to the dynamic requirements of network planning from a single source.
Xionet is the right contact for network planning, network inventory and network documentation. Xionet combines in-house telecommunication know-how with the utilisation of market tested partner products.
